Global Finance News Today: Oil Rallies, Gold Climbs as Wall Street Awaits CPI

Global finance news today illustration with world map, oil barrel, gold bars, and rising stock chart

Global finance news today centers on a market on edge, with oil extending a six day rally, gold climbing toward record territory, and Wall Street bracing for the most closely watched inflation report of the summer. The July Consumer Price Index lands at 8:30am Eastern, and traders across Asia, Europe and the United States are treating it as the next major signal for the Federal Reserve.

Oil Rallies as Strait of Hormuz Deal Stays Out of Reach

Brent crude pushed above 89 dollars a barrel, capping a rally of roughly 12 percent over five sessions, while West Texas Intermediate traded near 84 dollars. The gains came as talks between Iran and Oman over reopening the Strait of Hormuz dragged on without a breakthrough. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the conditions for reopening the waterway do not exist while the United States naval blockade continues.

Shipping through the strait, once responsible for roughly a fifth of global oil supply, has effectively collapsed since the conflict began in late February. Ship tracking data shows as few as eight vessels crossing on some recent days, compared with around 130 transits before the war. For more on how the standoff has whipsawed energy markets, see our earlier report on global stocks and oil holding near 83.50 dollars on Hormuz plans.

Wall Street Slips Ahead of the CPI Print

US stocks closed lower on Tuesday as the standoff between Washington and Tehran intensified. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 184.13 points, or 0.3 percent, to 53,791.85. The S&P 500 dropped 24.91 points, also 0.3 percent, to 7,728.20. The Nasdaq Composite lost 159.91 points, or 0.6 percent, to 26,445.45, weighed down in part by a slide in Alphabet shares.

Attention now shifts to the Federal Reserve, which has held its benchmark rate at 3.50 to 3.75 percent since June. A hotter than expected inflation print could revive talk of a rate hike, while a softer reading would give policymakers more room to hold steady. Gold and Silver Climb as Safe Haven Demand Builds

Gold futures rose 0.35 percent to 4,456.70 dollars an ounce, while silver gained 0.49 percent to 65.25 dollars. The move tracked a broader flight to safety tied to the Hormuz standoff, a fresh North Korean missile launch, and renewed tension involving Yemen aligned Houthi forces. Investors have used precious metals as a hedge against both geopolitical risk and the uncertainty hanging over Wednesday’s inflation data.

Europe Holds Near Records, Asia More Cautious

The pan European STOXX 600 finished little changed at 660.51 points, hovering near all time highs as strong corporate earnings offset concern over energy supply. Energy stocks jumped 1.7 percent and technology shares added 1.1 percent. Asian markets were more subdued, with futures pointing to a lower open across Australia and Hong Kong as traders held back from riskier bets ahead of the US inflation data.

Bitcoin Slips as Risk Appetite Fades

Bitcoin traded at 63,495.84 dollars, down 0.66 percent on the day, as traders trimmed risk ahead of the CPI release. The cryptocurrency has shown an unusually tight correlation with the S&P 500 in recent weeks, and analysts pointed to outflows from spot bitcoin ETFs as an added source of pressure. A softer inflation print could support a bounce toward 65,000 dollars, while a hotter reading risks pushing the coin back toward 62,700 dollars.
